First and foremost, we hope everyone in the Carolinas and southeastern U.S. are safe after Hurricane Helene hit our region last week. Our team in Charlotte is safe, but many of us have friends and family members that felt catastrophic impacts in Western North Carolina. The Internal Revenue Service yesterday announced disaster tax relief for all individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Helene, for the entire states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina and parts of Florida, Tennessee and Virginia.
If you reside in or have a business in an affected area, below is a summary of the changes made:
2023 Extended Tax Return Filing Deadline
If your 2023 personal or business tax return was extended and was originally due on 10/15/24, your tax return is now due on 5/1/25.
Taxes owed on these 2023 returns were due on 4/15/24, and there is no additional extension of time to pay these taxes. This means if you have a 2023 tax liability, you will continue to accrue interest and penalties until the tax is paid. This relief is only an additional extension of time to file your tax return, so we still recommend filing your 2023 tax return ASAP unless you are affected by the hurricane and need additional time to file.
2024 Q4 Estimated Tax Payments
These estimated tax payments that are normally due on 1/15/25 will now by due on 5/1/25.
2024 Tax Return Filing Deadline
Tax returns normally due in March/April 2025 will now be due on 5/1/25.
2024 individual tax payments are also due on 5/1/25.
As a firm, we will continue to treat 4/15/25 as the individual tax return deadline for 2024 individual returns since we service clients across the country. We will handle the extended deadline on a case-by-case basis.
2025 Q1 Estimated Tax Payments
These estimated tax payments that are normally due on 4/15/25 will now by due on 5/1/25.
Payroll Tax Returns
These quarterly tax returns that are normally due on 10/31/24, 1/31/25, and 4/30/25 will now be due on 5/1/25.
Please consult with your payroll provider if you have any additional questions on these filings/payments.
You can find the official IRS release here. The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer or business with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area. These taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief.
As of this writing, the states listed above have not released any disaster tax relief deadlines for their respective state tax returns, but we expect the states to eventually conform to these extended deadlines. We will keep you updated if any state decouples from the IRS on these deadlines.
If you have any questions or concerns about these changes, please contact your Fisher, PA team member. We are here to assist and will keep you informed with any additional developments.
